Melbourne Amplified Strings

MAS are 2 exceptional women who came together purely for the love of strings. Already accomplished and respected musicians in their own right, the vision to defy expectations and play music which shifts paradigms and stereotypes was shared, and since early 2018, MAS have been pushing the parameters, exploring a fusion of technologies and stretching the sonic boundaries of what is possible for stringed instruments.

Made up of Xani Kolac on violin and Anita Quayle on cello, they bring years of experience and musical expertise to both their collaborations and their compositions.

Their debut performance as MAS in 2018 saw them collaborate with Zimbabwean-born RnB singer Thando at a sell-out show at Chapel off Chapel. Thando’s songs were arranged for voice, strings and electronic effects and was a resounding success.

The decision was made then and there to curate 4 distinct and unique shows every year, teaming up with some of Melbourne’s most creative musical minds.

MAS have since joined forces with Indigenous opera singer Shauntai Batzke, cellist Richard Vaudrey, Pianists Nat Bartsch and Georgina Lewis, Guzheng instrumentalist Mindy Meng Wang, and Indian classical sitarist Sarita McHarg.

Performing in wide and varied venues across Melbourne, including the Melbourne Recital Centre, Toff in Town, Tempo Rubato, and the Hawthorn Arts Centre, this dynamic and innovative ensemble will continue to defy expectations and keep their audiences guessing.
